Pilsner Urquell

Pilsner Urquell, the original Pilsner from Plzeň, Czech Republic, remains unchanged since 1842. Made the same way, in the same place with the same local ingredients, Pilsner Urquell is a beer that has not been compromised, remaining true to its values of originality, authenticity and craftsmanship.

Made in the same way, same place with the same local ingredients.

Pilsner Urquell means ‘Pilsner from the Original Source’. It is still brewed at the Citizen’s Brewery, Plzeň. Of course we’ve had to add some new equipment at the brewery to keep up with demand, but the ingredients and methods remain the same. And so does the famous taste.

Saaz Hops: Locally grown from the Žatec region provide a fine hoppy aroma and pleasing bitterness.

Moravian Barley: Spring two-row barley which contributes to the beers golden clarity.

Plzeň Water: Drawn from the aquifers deep below Plzeň, the pure water is soft and low in minerals and salts.

Unique Brewing Process

In order to remain original in everything that we do, Pilsner Urquell maintains the same brewing process as first implemented by our original Brew Master, Josef Groll in 1842.

Triple Decoction: Unusually, Pilsner Urquell is triple-decocted, where by small batches of the main mash are removed, separately heated in small copper pans using direct flame, then replaced. This elaborate process is repeated three times and extracts additional smooth sugars from the malt which makes the beer richer and more full-bodied. It isn’t easy to do but it is fundamental to the way our beer tastes.

Direct Flame Heating: Direct gas flame heating adds a darker-golden colour and caramel sweeter taste to Pilsner Urquell (which balances the pleasing Saaz hop bitterness).

Parallel Brewing: Pilsner Urquell is regularly brewed using the original processes and oak-barrel lagering in the Plzeň tunnels. The ‘parallel brew’ is compared to Pilsner Urquell brewed using modern techniques, to ensure it remains identical.

Country of Origin: Plzeň, Czech Republic

Caramel tones and a subtle malty front of mouth sweetness (which originates from our open-flame triple decoction), a perfect balance with the pleasing bitterness in the mid mouth where the richer, more complex taste notes are revealed. Once the taste is fully expanded, it accelerates away to reveal a stunning clean finish.
